A search for 'FoxPro' on the MSDN subscriber downloads page yielded 7 results for me. Apparently, Visual FoxPro 7, 8, and 9 are available from the Visual Studio Professional level.

My boss has an HR app (ABRA) which she has to be able to use for probably another ten years. This app is based on Visual Foxpro 7.blech. Support for this app ended about 7 years ago. I have not been able to find any meaningful support-type information about this app on the internet.
I have been unsuccessful in getting it to run on her new Windows 7 x64 machine. She is needing access to this app and the new HR system simultaneously more and more. Is it possible to get this app running on Windows 7?
(preferred) Alternatively, is it possible to share just that application to her Windows 7 machine in an RDP type connection? We do not have licenses for Terminal Services, so even if I could get it working on a Windows server, that would not be an option. Also, low-cost is okay, but if a solution costs more than $100 it is probably a non-starter.
Biggest issue is the Win7 x64 version. VFP is 32-bit, since at least the version 6 days. But the installers for the apps and some code components are still stuck in the 16-bit days.
All Windows versions on SysWOW64 do not have a 16-bit compiler, so no 16-bit code can run on it. Without knowing the application, you could get around it by extracting it by hand from the installer program. Most installers back in the day used the 16-bit version because it was cheaper. Why buy 32-bit for what amounts to WinZip? You can do this by right clicking on the application and using 7zip to extract to a folder. Then run the setup from there, if it is setup as 32-bit native it will run and complete the install.
If that doesn't work, XP mode will be your only hope. Biggest issue is the Win7 x64 version. VFP is 32-bit, since at least the version 6 days. We have installed version 8 and 9 on a couple 64 bit machines, but I don't think we ever tested version 7. I will ask another admin and see if they have tried it. There are a couple of ways to share the app. The easiest would probably be to have her remote(RDP, VNC, Dameware, etc) into a machine that can run the app, that is of course, if she is the only one that needs to use it. It is also possible to make it a client/server application where the client machines do not need VFP installed. Then you will can run the app on virtually any machine (this is what we have done). This is, however; dependent upon how the app is setup and how you are using it.
We have tried XP mode in the past. It does not work well here. We use Novell for our platform, and the networking in XP mode does not play nicely with the NSS volumes on which our data sits. Music maker 17.
It constantly loses connection. Flat out RDP would work, but I was hoping to have something which is a bit more seamless.
I tried VirtualBox briefly, but it ate up too much memory. Our systems only run about 2 GB of RAM. Compatibility mode does not help in this case.
I spent hours fiddling with different options of compatibility mode to try and get it working with no success. @PSXDefector: Thank you for that information. I was not aware of the 16-bit pieces of FoxPro. Unfortunately the install is not the problem. That actually runs fine.

The problem arises when launching the program. @MattRat: That sounds very interesting. I would very much like to hear what you find. I guess I should have included more information about where the problem occurs.
When launching the app, it gives an error about being unable to find something in VERSION.DLL. This is a file in the same folder as the program executable. Somewhere I saw a suggestion of deleting this file so the program would recreate it properly. I renamed the file.
Then the program window would come up, but it said it could not find version.dll. I think there was also something about vfp7r.dll as well, but I am not on that system right at the moment. While installing Windows 7 32-bit would work to alleviate the 16-bit incompatibilities, I have tried the program on Win7 32 and it still has the problem with the version.dll file. I very much appreciate all of your input. Spiggyman wrote: I guess I should have included more information about where the problem occurs.

Wow.lots of limitations.2GB RAM, VFP7 (due to ABRA).
I worked with VFP5 through VFP9 over the years and a few versions of ABRA when I was at a prior company. Our VFP code pulled from ABRA. Finally convinced the owners to leave ABRA behind years ago.terrible code. Anyway, if you have to stay with all these limitations, that reduces your options a lot. I use VirtualBox on my W7 client and it works great, but I have 8GB RAM. If you can't upgrade RAM I'm sure that XP Mode will be frustrating.you could try it though. As far as the.dll errors there are a few files you need to have in your working directory (home dir) for VFP code to run.
This may help you: Remote software like TightVNC, DameWare, RAdmin would work and may be your best option.however you'd have to pay for all but TightVNC unless there is something else out there. It would not cost a lot to buy 1 or 2 licenses however. Labeljoy 5.2.0 build 104 + keygen.
